LORD Corporation Lowers DOCs for AB139

Challenge
LORD was asked to design and manufacturer the main and tail rotor spherical bearings, as well as an elastomeric damper in the tail rotor of the aircraft. Safety, reliability and low direct operating Costs (DOCs) were predominant goals for the AB139.

Solution
LORD Corporation’s design solution included a modification of the company’s proven elastomeric bearings and dampers, well-known for their ability to accommodate steady and dynamic loads, while allowing for or controlling motion. The dampers were custom-designed with unique elastomeric materials, resulting in optimal performance for thousands of hours over a wide temperature range and requiring only minimal maintenance.

Results
Laboratory qualification testing has demonstrated lives of approximately 5,000 flight hours for the dampers. Such longevity results in lower DOCs.
