Water Based Adhesives & Covercoats
Chemlok water-based adhesives and covercoats protect the environment while increasing workplace safety. Because solvents are not present in aqueous rubber adhesives and primers, workers aren’t exposed to fumes. This, in turn, eliminates potential fire hazards associated with flammable solvents. Since aqueous adhesive systems are diluted with deionized water at a fraction of the cost of solvents, production application costs can be dramatically reduced as well. Storage of hazardous solvents can also be eliminated or significantly reduced, leading to a reduction in insurance and inventory costs.
Features & Benefits
- Versatility - Within the Chemlok line of aqueous adhesive systems, a sufficient number of primer/covercoat combinations are available to satisfy most bonding applications, particularly those involving natural rubber, SBT, NBR and polychlorprene.
- Volatile Organic Compounds - Most of Chemlok aqueous adhesives are free of organic solvents. All are considered VOC compliant with VOC levels lower than 1.6 lbs/gallon.
- Heating/Ventilation Efficiencies - Since less spray booth and dip tank ventilation is required with aqueous adhesives, overall air make-up costs and demands are reduced.
- Clean-Up - The clean-up of Chemlok aqueous adhesive systems can be accomplished with regular tap water. Dried, uncured films can be removed with alcohol, ketone or aqueous alkaline solutions.
- Reduced Waste Disposal Costs - Chemlok aqueous adhesive systems have fewer hazardous ingredients such as lead or lead salts. For this reason, it may be possible to dispose of the wastes resulting from the use of these systems in a landfill rather than incinerate them. - Higher Coverage Per Gallon - The high solids content of aqueous adhesives provides higher levels of coverage than what is expected of comparable solvent-based systems. In some cases, the coverage provided by aqueous systems is approximately twice as high.
- Reduced Evaporation Rate - With Chemlok aqueous adhesive systems, the slower evaporation rate of water reduces the labor needed to make frequent solvent additions to dip tanks for control of viscosity.
- Application Efficiencies - All Chemlok aqueous adhesive systems can be applied using a wide variety of spray techniques. In most instances, the high solids content and low viscosity of aqueous adhesives allow for single-pass spray application. Some aqueous primers and covercoats can also be dipped, brushed and roll coated.
