LORD Corporation Reduces Labor and Costs for Trailer Manufacturer

4-Star Trailers — one of the nation's leading manufacturers of custom aluminum horse trailers.
Challenge
4-Star challenged LORD Corporation to develop a specialty structural adhesive to their trailer doors that ensures optimal strength. For more than 20 years, 4-Star Trailers has welded the components of their aluminum trailers together, so they were initially skeptical about using LORD adhesives.
Solution
For a two-year period, LORD and 4-Star Trailers conducted extensive testing to develop fixtures and test the strength of the bonded designs. LORD Corporation's bonded door cannot warp out-of-plumb because of its superior stiffness. With double the impact resistance, the LORD bonded doors were four time stiffer than 4 Star's welded doors.
Results
Not only has 4-Star reduced labor by 50%, but the switch from rivets, adhesive tape and welding to adhesive bonding also has resulted in materials savings for 4-Star. In addition, the adhesives are a quieter solution, which is important in reducing the stress horses experience during transport.
