LORD Corporation's Carruthers Presenting at 2012 Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering Convention
(05/15/2012)
Seth Carruthers, Ph.D., Lead Staff Engineer, Chemical Engineering, will be presenting at the 2012 Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE) convention.
The presentation will be held Wednesday, May 23 at 3:50 PM, at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Md. The presentation is titled "LORD UltraConductive Materials for Lightning Strike Protection of Composite Aircraft"
LORD UltraConductive Film and Coatings offer equivalent lightning strike protection to conventional expanded metal foils at half of the weight. This non-nano, epoxy polymer, is available as a spray-on-tool primer or surfacing film - improving manufacturability and enabling automation. No expanded metal foil is needed-significantly reducing reliance on sandable surfacing primers and paint required covering up expanded foil's poor surface finish. In addition, LORD UltraConductive provides exceptional EMI protection.
"LORD UltraConductive Film and Coatings protect composites at half the weight and enable OEMs to improve throughput," said Carruthers. "OEM evaluations are uncovering savings in part fabrication costs and long term cost of ownership compared to the conventional use of expanded metal foil."
Carruthers is leading the multi-disciplinary technical team focused on commercializing LORD UltraConductive films and coatings. Carruthers holds a Ph.D. in chemical engineering and has been working in the field of conductive polymeric materials for 10 years.
