LORD Corporation’s Mahmood To Present At The American Helicopter Society International
(04/20/2012)
LORD Corporation has announced that Raheel Mahmood, Mechanical Engineer, Global Technology, will present at the American Helicopter Society (AHS) International 68th Annual Forum & Technology Display.
The presentation will be held Wednesday, May 2 at 10:15 a.m., at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas. The topic is entitled "In-flight Demonstration of Active Vibration Control Technologies on the Bell 429 Helicopter."
Active control of vibration on the floor in the passenger and crew areas of a pre-production Bell 429 helicopter was demonstrated with two variants of the LORD active vibration control system. The installed systems consisted of actuators mounted on the airframe, a central control computer and amplifier, and an accelerometer array. Two types of actuator technology were demonstrated: inertial electrodynamic linear actuators and circular force generators. With either choice of actuator technology, weight of the vibration treatment could be reduced relative to the existing passive treatment that uses tuned vibration absorbers. Flight conditions for which vibration reductions were measured included two aircraft weight and center-of-gravity configurations, an extended range of main rotor speeds, several forward speeds, and various maneuvers. Both active systems successfully reduced vertical-axis cabin vibrations below the specified target with minimal exceptions.
Mahmood is responsible for design, development, and field testing of aftermarket active vibration control and active balancing systems on multiple rotary and fixed-wing commercial and military aircraft. Since joining the LORD electromechanical systems group in 2009, he has worked on several projects in an engineering capacity to successfully integrate active vibration control and active balancing products onto various platforms. In addition, he has been involved with hardware qualification, laboratory test development, and research. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in physics with a minor in mathematics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
