Global oversight of EHS management is provided internally through the Office of Environmental Health, Safety and Regulatory Compliance.
Ongoing efforts, such as global Behavior Based Safety (BBS) programs and ISO 14001 conformance, assist LORD in conducting its business responsibly, and in a manner designed to protect the health and safety of our employees customers, the public and the environment.
Environmental Progress
The 1990s and 2000s saw a great deal of environmental progress at LORD Corporation. Much of this progress was achieved with capital projects.
- Completed commercial manufacturing facility for waterborne rubber-to-metal adhesives.
- Converted all electrical transformers to PCB-free status.
- Upgraded or removed all underground tanks.
- Replaced all coal boilers with natural gas boilers.
- Replaced all earthen dikes with concrete dikes around chemical tank farms.
- Replaced all chlorinated solvent degreasing units with alkaline degreasing units.
- Implemented wastewater recycling at two manufacturing facilities.
- Reduced over-the-road shipments of hazardous waste by implementing rail shipments.
- Achieved ISO 14001 registration for 5 manufacturing plants.
Form R Air Emissions
Section 313 of the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act requires certain LORD Corporation manufacturing facilities to file Form R reports about chemical emissions from the preceding year. The aggregate reported air emissions for all applicable LORD manufacturing facilities shown on Form R reports for the previous 10 years is shown on the graph below:

Manufacturing Environmental Costs
As a tool for managing our business, LORD Corporation measures manufacturing environmental costs annually. The metrics used for measuring these costs includes depreciation from capital projects, expense, internal labor and hazardous waste disposal costs. A typical capital cost may be for replacing coal boilers with gas boilers. A typical expense cost would cover the removal of an old underground tank. Worldwide environmental costs from our operations as a percentage of sales is shown on the figure below. Costs for remediation are not included.
Environmental costs from our operations are compared to sales on the graph below.
