Hurricane Hunters - A Force to be Reckoned With

( 09/20/2018 ) Written by: Gary McNerney

As the Carolinas continue post-Hurricane Florence clean up, LORD Corporation would like to thank the Hurricane Hunters of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for their courageous service.

Hurricane Hunters are those brave individuals who purposely fly into the eye of a hurricane while others are bracing for the storm. Without them, and the team of meteorologists who fly with them, those of us on the ground would have little idea of where and when a hurricane would make landfall. Information collected during these reconnaissance flights directly contribute to the safety of people in harm’s way.

NOAA Hurricane Hunters use a specially equipped Lockheed WP-3DE Orion aircraft equipped with LORD Engine mounts to surveil, map and research hurricanes. LORD's engine mounts are specifically designed to take the immense thrust and gravitational forces imparted by buffeting winds in excess of 150 miles per hour instead of the engine core - reducing vibration, motion and noise. Additionally, these mounts increase the damage tolerance for fan blade-outs and minimize routine maintenance.

The impact of data gathered during these flights is drastic – up to 30% more accurate according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). Forecasters at the NHC are responsible for determining the types of watches and warnings, and ultimately, how much of the coast needs to be evacuated prior to landfall.

That 30% increase helps to zero in on the forecasts we’ve come to depend on.  And at an estimated cost of $1 million per coastal mile to evacuate and rescue, the more accurate the landfall location the better.

LORD Corporation is very proud to play a small part in this.
