Mississippi State University is home to one of the nation’s top vehicle research centers, known as CAVS – Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems. CAVS is a world-class technology development center comprised of engineering, research, development, and technology transfer teams. Founded in 2002, CAVS is committed to exploring solutions to complex problems in areas such as autonomous vehicles, materials science, high-performance computing, advanced controls, and human-machine interaction. For years, MSU’s Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems has been a driving force in the growth and maturity of the U.S. automotive industry.
Today, MSU researchers are leading the Halo Project, and designing a fully electric, autonomous, off-road sports utility vehicle. As with all electric vehicles, thermal management of the battery pack is a primary concern. Due to the need for heat dissipation from the batteries, LORD Corporation has collaborated with CAVS for a unique opportunity to partner on this initiative. In May of 2018, LORD Applications Engineer Nick Cupelli visited CAVS to assist with the production of the supercar by demonstrating the application of one of LORD’s thermally-conductive silicone gap fillers. CoolTherm® silicone gap filler was used as a thermal interface material between the batteries and the cooling plate of the pack.
LORD CoolTherm® gap fillers promote conduction by displacing any air that resides in both the large gaps and the microscopic rough surfaces that exist between the substrates to be bridged.
