A strategic customer of one of our channel partners, RPM Rubber Parts, needed a solution to an unusual situation. The customer had a new audio system that needed vibration isolation for the brackets holding the speakers. The speakers play at a high decibel range – as much as 10 times the range of many entertainment systems – and the schematic featured as many as 42 separate speakers for its immersive, multi-channel sound system.
“This was a different speaker design, so when they were upgrading their systems this actually was a brand-new situation, “says Mike McNeil, Sales Manager, RPM Rubber Parts.
The customer wanted to minimize any vibration coming through the speaker bracket. When turned on, the vibration from the speakers could loosen the brackets, causing the speakers to actually shake out of the brackets. Not only could this vibration create a distracting noise, the loose brackets presented a possible safety issue in addition to increased maintenance and repair calls.
Engineers at RPM Rubber Parts engaged with their client to discover solutions to the problem. The customer was looking for a type of isolation mount that would reduce vibration-related movement when the speaker was in use.
Due to the way the speakers were mounted, the brackets were facing different directions on a chassis and the vibration isolation method had to work no matter the direction of the bracket. It was up to RPM Rubber Parts to determine a solution that could isolate the speaker and bracket – regardless of the orientation.
To do this, RPM Rubber Parts used Parker LORD’s Plateform Mounts. These mounts are ideal for protecting equipment against damaging vibration. To provide the protection needed, each bracket used 3-4 mounts to isolate the vibration. Constructed with high-strength bonds and specially compounded elastomers, these mounts have the high load-carrying capacity and long life needed for this application. Normally used in industrial equipment, this was a new, but exceptional use for these mounts.
Elastomeric mounts (such as the plateform mounts used here) provide simple, reliable and cost-effective solutions to isolate vibration and shock, accommodate motion, and decrease noise.
The engineered solution proved to solve their customer’s vibration issue and they will be implementing it globally. This “out-of-the-box thinking” of using a standard part for a new function solved the breakage, sound control, vibration control and maintenance repair problems – and enhances the audio experience for customer.
