Electrification of the semi will help meet consumer demand

Anything Elon Musk does tends to create a media buzz, and the Tesla Semi is no exception. The latest media frenzy is warranted, however, as it has long-term positive implications for the electric vehicle industry, as well as our growing distribution needs throughout North America. 

Announced in November, the Tesla Semi is a heavy-duty all-electric truck program that has already found buyers, such as Walmart and other national retailers. Equipped with four independent electric motors on rear axles, the truck has enough juice for a 0 to 60 mph acceleration with a full load in 20 seconds. And while that is impressive and resulted in big headlines, what is really key about this launch is the great impact the electrification of semis will have in terms of meeting the needs of consumers and drivers alike. It is hard to imagine a driver tackling more than 500 miles a day at maximum weight and highway speed, which is the range of this newly launched electric truck, so we now have a more cost-effective and energy-efficient solution that meets the needs of the driver.  Estimates shared by Tesla at the launch and in media reports predict a Tesla Semi driven at 60 miles per hour with a full load on a 100-mile route would cost about $1.26 a mile to operate, compared to $1.51 per mile for a diesel truck.
