LORD Corporation Announces LORD® 810 Low Read-Through Acrylic Adhesive

Designed to eliminate the growing probability of read-through, LORD Corporation has announced an acrylic adhesive system LORD® 810 LRT.

When cured with LORD Accelerator 20, LORD 810 LRT Acrylic Adhesive creates a flexible system for bonding metals, such as aluminum, galvanized steel and cold rolled steel (CRS), as well as engineered plastics such as PC-ABS and ASA. The adhesive system delivers fast cure speed and strong bonding with little to no bond-line read-through (BLRT). LORD Accelerator 20 allows precise control of the adhesive bond-line thickness due to its content of glass beads.  

According to Jim Perritt, U.S. and Canada Sales Manager for LORD Product Assembly, this system was developed to alleviate the read-through problem that occurs when the adhesive can be seen through the substrate. "Anything assembled with thin-gauge materials (composite or metal) can suffer from this surface distortion problem," he said. Being able to see the adhesive line is not acceptable by automotive OEMs looking to achieve a world-class finish.  

"Read-through is growing more common as transportation industries switch to thinner-gauge, composite substrates as a replacement for steel components and as a means to save on assembly costs and provide better fuel economy to consumers," said Larry Johns, LORD National Accounts Manager. "Similarly, as the industry continues to transition from welding to structural adhesives, as well as experiment with various substrates ranging from steel and plastics to aluminum, it is crucial to employ adhesives that are formulated to balance strength with read-through requirements. As requirements change for conditions such as light-weighting, longevity and quality - and a mixture of substrate materials become more popular - manufacturers have begun to rely more on adhesives for bonding."  

An application involving spoilers for a car manufacturer proves the value of the 810 Acrylic Adhesive. The automotive OEM had a "cost of quality" clause in its contracts with suppliers; if a part does not have perfect appearance, the OEM will accept it, but pay a reduced price. A supplier, making spoilers for this OEM's vehicles, was continually forced to accept a lower profit margin due to high read-through. Once the supplier switched to LORD 810 Low Read-Through Adhesive, the issues previously experienced were solved.  

In another example, a supplier was having problems manufacturing carbon fiber hoods. The supplier was using a thin-gauge carbon fiber substrate and was having difficulties with adhesive read-through on the hoods. After trying LORD 810 Low Read-Through Adhesive, the supplier was able to eliminate read-through.  

Requiring little or no substrate preparation for bonding metals and plastics, this adhesive solution remains in position when applied on vertical or overhead surfaces, allowing for greater process flexibility. Offering great environmental resistance, the system has proven to resist dilute acids, alkalis, solvents, greases, oils and moisture. Further, it also provides excellent resistance to UV exposure and weathering. Complete cure requires 24 hours at room temperature. Mating surfaces must be held in contact during the entire curing process. Cure rate can be accelerated by applying modest heat [<66°C)].  

Available in 400 mL, 200 mL, 50 mL, 5 gallon pails, and drums, the mixed adhesive bonds to surfaces using a handheld cartridge or automatic meter/mix/ dispense equipment.
