LORD Corporation Showcases Expertise at Annual Joining in Car Body Engineering Conference

(Cary, N.C. – March 2, 2017) – LORD Corporation – a leader in developing and manufacturing high-performance adhesive products – will share its expertise as speakers at the annual Automotive Circle conference Joining in Car Body Engineering 2017.

The presentation, “Adhesives in the body shop – current and future requirements,” will take place on Tues., April 4 at 10:25 a.m.

To be held April 4-6 in Bad Nauheim, Germany, the conference brings together an international network of expert engineers to discuss latest technical progress and strategies concerning all joining technologies that are of relevance in industrial car body production. LORD Corporation’s Mark Pressley, lead staff scientist, Structural Adhesives R&D, and Federico Ciardelli, global market and business development manager, will highlight a new adhesive designed specifically for this market that has gained recent approval by major OEM.

LORD Versilok® 273/331 is a two-component, epoxy-modified acrylic adhesive designed for bonding a variety of automotive sheet metals including hot-dip galvanized, electro-galvanized, bare aluminum, and cold-rolled steel. Versilok 273/331 can be either room-temperature (RT) cured or heat-cured for faster processing. The material features glass beads that provide a strong mechanical lock that prevents shifting of substrate panels. The easy-to-apply adhesive utilizes non-sagging rheology that replaces the need for spot welding which can degrade metal and allow rusting to occur.

Versilok 271/331 develops a high-strength bond in less than one hour at room temperature, eliminating metal warpage caused by high-curing induction temperatures. The adhesive bonds exceptionally well through most of the various stamping lubricants typically present on metals, eliminating the need for advance cleaning and surface preparation. Other product features include environmental resistance to moisture, sunlight, salt spray, and thermal cycling; and the adhesives contain an odor suppressant.

Compared to previous generations, this product offers:

  • significantly improved corrosion resistance on aluminum and electro-galvanized steel,
  • dimensional stability of closure panels due to improved adhesion and elasticity,
  • chemical reactivity behavior (BPO) of the hardener Versilok 331,
  • CKD shipping process of closure panels due to a good and improved resistance against humidity lay-over (HLO), and 
  • packaging behavior and process-ability with no requirement to heat the hardener Versilok 331 in order to obtain the correct mixing ratio.  

According to Pressley, LORD is excited to share the benefits of this new material at this conference as the quest for the optimal material mix continues. “Versilok 273/331 is extremely beneficial for automakers involved in the body-in-white closure panel bonding processes, especially for those with complex shapes,” said Pressley. “In addition to the improved adhesion properties, it will likely reduce warranty claims caused by corrosion.”
