LORD Corporation's Del Vecchio, Myers and Stull to Present at American Chemical Society Rubber Expo

RJ Del Vecchio, Consultant; Mason Myers, Scientist, Elastomer Adhesives and Coatings Technical Group; and Brian Stull, Senior Technical Support Representative, Elastomer Adhesives and Coatings Technology Group, will present a seminar at the 2012 American Chemical Society (ACS) Rubber Expo™, Technical Meeting and Educational Symposium. 

The two-day seminar course will be held Oct. 9 and 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at The Duke Energy Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. The seminar is titled, "Rubber Bonding: Intro to Application," and will cover the bonding of rubber compounds to solid substrates (metals, plastics, etc.), the chemistry, mechanics and overall methods of achieving and evaluating such bonds. The first day of the course will cover the following:  

  • History and evolution of rubber bonding 
  • Test methods for rubber bonds and their meaning
  • How various bond chemistries work and interact with vulcanization chemistry
  • Examples of bonding studies
  • Specialized new bonding technologies
  • Basic troubleshooting of the bonding process

The second day will progress to include the following: 

  • The many varieties of available primers and adhesives
  • Selection of particular adhesives for both different types of elastomers and different molding methods
  • A thorough examination of the kinds of surface preparations needed to optimize bond strength
  • Discussion of various application methods for adhesives and the required equipment
  • Bond testing and evaluation further discussion
  • Analysis of poor or failed bonds and how it can lead to discovery of a robust bonding technique 

Since 1990, Del Vecchio has been a Consultant in the rubber and industrial division. With experience in the rubber industry with engineering applications of rubber and the normal technical skills involved in compounding and processing a variety of elastomers, he began consulting for LORD Corporation in 1990. He has published numerous technical papers at ACS meetings, appears in the trade literature here and overseas, and authored several chapters in technical books.  He has published several technical pieces for the industry. As the author of a book on practical applications of Design of Experiment in the rubber industry published in 1997, the book has been reprinted four times with an expanded edition currently in the works. In addition, Del Vecchio authored "A Beginner's Guide to Rubber Technology" and edited "Fundamentals of Rubber Technology for the Rubber Division."Myers is a Scientist within the Elastomers, Adhesives and Coatings Technical Service and Application Development group at LORD Corporation. With expertise in thermoplastic materials, injection molding, 3D modeling and flow simulation, he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Plastics Engineering Technology from Pennsylvania State University.Stull has been with LORD Corporation for more than 29 years, and he currently works in the Customer Support Center providing technical service for industrial and automotive rubber-to-metal bonding applications. He has expertise in product recommendations, troubleshooting, process reviews and operator training.
