LORD Corporation's Technology to be Presented at Offshore Technology Conference Brazil
( 09/01/2013 )
LORD Corporation has announced Mark Norris, Ph.D., Manager of Open Technology Innovation, Global Technology, will present a paper at the Offshore Technology Conference Brazil.
The event will take place Tuesday Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. in Room 202 B, Session 11 - Risers and Flowlines, at the RioCentro Convention Center, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The presentation is titled "Passive Vibration Control Treatment for Subsea Pipelines." Norris co-authored this presentation with Stephen Williams, Business Development Manager Surface Equipment, Oil & Gas Group and Keith Ptak, Staff Engineer at LORD Corporation.
Subsea pipelines can have significant vibration amplitudes due to subsea currents, commonly referred to as vortex induced vibration (VIV). These vibrations can result in high-cycle fatigue and reduce the effective life of the pipe. The presentation will demonstrate how Pipeline Vibration Dampers (PVDs) can be used to mitigate subsea pipeline vibration and provide another potential solution to this problem.
Norris has more than 30 years of research and development expertise in the field of Vibration Control. He has been with LORD Corporation for 24 years, working primarily with the Electromechanical Systems Group. The group spearheaded the development and commercialization of a number of electromechanical technologies including Active Vibration Control Systems, Active Balance Systems, Torque Monitoring Systems, Feedback Control Technologies, and Semi-Active suspension systems. In his current role, he is responsible for leveraging LORD technologies to develop new customers in Oil and Gas Markets. Norris holds 10 patents in Vibration Control technologies and has authored or co-authored more than 50 technical papers and journal publications. He received his Ph.D. in engineering mechanics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
Ptak has 20 years of experience working as a product development engineer. He joined LORD Corporation in 1998 and has worked in the Vehicles & Equipment, Mechanical Products Technology Development, Rotary Wing, and the Oil & Gas engineering groups. Ptak is the inventor of LORD Corporation's Tuned Vibration Absorbers that are used to mitigate wind-induced vibration on the Alaska Pipeline. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Williams has more than 40 years of experience working in Product Development, Manufacturing, Service, and Marketing and Sales. He joined LORD Corporation in 2003 and is currently Business Development Manager Surface Equipment, Oil & Gas Group. Williams has expertise in rotating equipment, vibration analysis and Active Balancing Systems. During his career, Williams has conducted business in more than 40 countries with international assignments in Africa and the Middle East. He received a Bachelor of Science degree with a dual major in engineering and marketing management in the U.K.
